When and how did you learn about Dungeons and Dragons? Do you remember the first time you played?

In grade 8 my dad was talking to me about what he used to play during school. (I was just getting hardcore into gaming competitively) And he told me about the old tournaments they used to hold and Dungeons and Dragons. His stories made me want to have stories of my own to tell people and so he brought me to a game store and taught me to play the new edition. We learned it together.

A couple of guys in a grade ahead of me played, and when I started HS, I somehow hooked up with them. We played behind the house that my wife lived in (though I didn't know her at the time).
I played with them for a couple of years, and then we got away from it. Later, though - some other friends of mine told me that they played regularly and could use another player - so I hooked up with them and we played regularly after that.

I dunno - I'm kind of a non-conformant. Do my own thing, and I don't give a flying walinda what anyone thinks. I avoid cliques like the plague, but I'm not antisocial by any stretch. Ever watch the Young Ones? I'm Mike. Clean cut, educated, rational - but I'd rather hang out with the dirtbags than the cool dudes. Which is probably why I got into D&D. ;D

His dad would hear that, cackle, and roll the dice behind the DM board. It was fantastic.

Just remember, the DM's dice always roll 1 higher than you thought possible.
