i heard the 2nd one sucked You hear horribly wrong. The second Half Life was wonderful, and a unique and original gem in the midst of the fetid see of monotone that is modern FPSs. It did so many incredible new things. Hell, the Gravity Gun alone is reason to pick it up.

I think you might be thinking of Half-Life 2 episode 1 or Half Life 2 episode 2. If you are, they where meant to be short. Have you played Portal? It's only like 3 hours, but it is GREAT!

Do you suppose the Half Life games will progressively get a bit shorter with every release?

Do you suppose the Half Life games will progressively get a bit shorter with every release? They may be getting shorter, but they're also getting cheaper. That's Valve's entire strategy. With Steam they hope to be able to A)Release shorter games, B)For a lower cost, C)More often. Now, they have A and B, it's C that is the trouble. Basically with their "Episodic" games, as well as others, the point is to, instead of having one big game released in say June for 60$, have 3 or so smaller games, each 1/3 of the big games total, first one released for 20$ in April, 2nd for 20$ in May, and 3rd for 20$ in June.

Okay, except I doubt they'll be released for $20. It'll probably be like $50.

They're more idealistic, because they're still an independent and kind of contained company. Yeah, my friend bought the entire Orange Box (Halflife 2, HL2 Episodes 1&2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal) for like 50-60$. And he pre-ordered it.
